With the Coronanvirus pandemic and social distancing guidelines altering life in the United States, the NFL was forced to reimagine its 2020 draft and turn it into a virtual event. The college player selection meeting in Las Vegas was canceled, and team executives had to conduct the draft from home — fully equipped with cameras so that Tv audiences could get at least some glimpse into the event beyond Roger Goodell sitting in his basement.
Three members of the New England Patriots were prominently featured during the three days worth of broadcasts: head coach/general manager Bill Belichick, director of player personnel Nick Caserio, and owner Robert Kraft. All three of them were regularly captured on camera over draft weekend, with the Patriots themselves recently releasing a video that goes beyond what was visible on television between Thursday night and Saturday.
The 4.5-minute clip shows Belichick, Kraft and New England’s director of football/head coach administration, Berj Najarian, informing players about being drafted, their reactions, and some internal talk about trades like the one made with the New York Jets to move up the board for tight end Dalton Keene in the third round. All in all, the clip an interesting look into the virtual draft from the Patriots’ perspective. And you also get to see Bill Belichick with glasses.
