Of the nine players waived by the New England Patriots on Sunday, one would be claimed on Monday.
Rookie linebacker Kyahva Tezino has been awarded to the Carolina Panthers, the organization announced.
Tezino had signed with the Patriots as part of the 2020 undrafted class out of San Diego State, where he appeared in 48 games and made 31 starts. Twice a first-team All-Mountain West selection, Tezino’s tenure with the Aztecs included 290 tackles, 15.5 sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.
He received a $10,000 signing bonus and $60,000 in guaranteed base salary from New England this spring. The latter figure will now be taken on by Carolina.
Quarterbacks J’Mar Smith and Brian Lewerke, wide receivers Isaiah Zuber, Sean Riley and Will Hastings, defensive tackle Courtney Wallace, as well as safeties Malik Gant and Adarius Pickett cleared waivers, per Monday’s NFL transaction wire. Their departures brought the Patriots’ roster from 90 to 80 players ahead of training camp.
All clubs must meet the 80-man threshold by Aug. 16.
