The first injury report of the 2020 season arrived Wednesday afternoon for the New England Patriots.
On it were five names as preparations for the Miami Dolphins continue in Foxborough. Those names include offensive tackle Yodny Cajuste and linebacker Cassh Maluia, who were the lone 53-man absences from practice for New England.
Here’s the initial prognosis for both sides of the AFC East heading into Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium.
DID NOT PARTICIPATE
- Patriots: OT Yodny Cajuste (knee), LB Cassh Maluia (knee)
- Dolphins: no players listed
Cajuste had spent the entirety of 2019 on the non-football injury list after undergoing quad surgery during the pre-draft process. The West Virginia product, selected in the third round last spring, was sidelined by a knee injury on Wednesday. The same went for Maluia, a rookie sixth-rounder out of Wyoming who was elevated from the practice squad to begin the week.
No member of Miami’s active roster was a non-participant.
LIMITED PARTICIPATION
- Patriots: WR Julian Edelman (knee), WR Gunner Olszewski (foot), LB Chase Winovich (shoulder)
- Dolphins: WR DeVante Parker (hamstring), WR Preston Williams (knee), TE Mike Gesicki (glute), LB Kyle Van Noy (hand), CB Xavien Howard (knee), CB Byron Jones (Achilles)
Patriots wide receivers in Edelman and Olszewski were officially limited on Wednesday due to knee and foot ailments, respectively. As was Winovich on the other side of the ball because of a shoulder injury. Winovich registered 5.5 sacks for New England’s defense as a rookie.
Six Dolphins players practiced in a limited capacity, including three targets who combined for 2,200 yards and 17 touchdowns a campaign ago. Van Noy also was a partial participant for Miami. The former Patriots linebacker and current Dolphins captain is dealing with a hand injury.
FULL PARTICIPATION
- Patriots: no players listed
- Dolphins: QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip)
No Patriots graduated from limited to full participation on Wednesday.
But for Miami, Tagovailoa practiced in full. The No. 5 overall pick out of Alabama will begin his rookie campaign as the second-in-command quarterback behind veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick.
