Stephon Gilmore, the two time All-Pro and 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year’s time has come to an end in Foxborough. The fan favorite is considered by many to be amongst the top defensive backs and overall players in the NFL. Unfortunately, much to Pats fans’ dismay, Gilmore and the Patriots were unable to reach a long-term contract extension which ultimately led to the former Buffalo and New England star being dealt to the Carolina Panthers.
Gilmore was traded to the Panthers for a 6th round pick in the 2023 NFL after reports came out Wednesday morning about the 2019 DPOY’s release. He will join a solid defensive back core that includes the likes of Donte Jackson, A.J. Bouye, and fellow South Carolina Gamecock Alumnis Jaycee Horn. Jaycee sustained a serious foot injury in week 3 against the Houston Texans that will sideline the 1st round pick for the remainder of the season. Gilmore was a camp holdout this offseason for reasons related to his lack of contract extension success with New England.
Thus far, Stephon has spent the entire 2021 season on the IR for a quad injury. Gilmore will look for a substantial pay increase this off-season to more than double his current 7M salary. New England fans will miss Gilmore, but fortunately he leaves a DB room with a plethora of proven stars who look ready to step up and fill the all-pro’s vacancy.
