The New England Patriots activated quarterback Jarrett Stidham off the physically unable to perform list on Tuesday, as first reported by ESPN’s Field Yates.
The 2019 fourth-round pick saw his 21-day practice window open on Oct. 20, along with defensive tackle Byron Cowart.
Stidham began training camp on New England’s PUP list after undergoing back surgery. He now rejoins rookie starter Mac Jones and veteran Brian Hoyer on the quarterback depth chart while Garrett Gilbert resides on the practice squad.
The 25-year-old by way of Baylor and Auburn has appeared in eight NFL games, going 24-of-48 passing for 270 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. His rookie contract runs through 2022.
The Patriots stood with an opening on the 53-man roster following the waiving of interior offensive lineman James Ferentz on Monday. Ferentz, a vested veteran who cleared waivers, intends to re-sign to the practice squad, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN. The 32-year-old Iowa product twice served as a standard elevation and once as a Covid-19 replacement this fall.
In an additional move, New England released cornerback Brian Poole from the practice squad on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Poole had agreed to terms in Week 7 after making previous stops with the Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets and New Orleans Saints dating back to his undrafted arrival out of Florida in 2016.
