The New England Patriots had a comparatively quiet Friday. While they did swing a trade up in the second round and ended up picking defensive tackle Christian Barmore and edge linebacker Ronnie Perkins in the second and third rounds, respectively, other teams were more active on both the trade and the selection markets.

As a result, Bill Belichick and company are still left with plenty of capital heading into the third and final day of the NFL’s 2021 Draft. In total, the team owns the following five selections to be invested over the four remaining rounds:

Round 4: 4-120

Round 5: 5-177

Round 6: 6-188, 6-197

Round 7: 7-242

As can be seen, New England is currently scheduled to be on the clock in every round on Saturday. Given the accumulation of picks in Round 6, however, it would not be a surprise if the Patriots opted to bundle some of their draft choices together to move around the board. Just like they did on Friday, trading up to target specific players to bring onto a rather deep roster all around might be the best course of action.

New England, of course, could also opt to involve future draft choices in any potential trades — either to create more flexibility this year, or to boost the capital in 2022 when the Patriots will likely not be awarded any compensatory selections. Moves like that would not be unprecedented from the team’s perspective, even though it is more likely that no future selections become part of any potential moves.

For additional information about this capital, let’s refer to the trusted draft value chart created by Pats Pulpit’s own Rich Hill:

Round 4: 4-120 (23.10)

Round 5: 5-177 (6.49)

Round 6: 6-188 (5.08), 6-197 (4.16)

Round 7: 7-242 (1.53)

As can be seen, New England’s picks are worth a combined 40.36 value points. This value is roughly the equivalent of the 95th overall selection in the fourth round — an area where the Patriots drafted defensive edge Ronnie Perkins last night. For comparison, the Patriots had only 25.49 points available entering last year’s final day of the draft. They still were able get some quality players in the form of offensive linemen Michael Onwenu and Justin Herron.

All in all, this shows that the team has some flexibility to maneuver around the board if it desires to do just that.
