The New England Patriots entered Day 3 of the 2021 NFL Draft with five choices in hand, and the next of them has now been invested. Staying put at the 177th overall pick in the fifth round, the Patriots added to their linebacker corps by selecting Cameron McGrone out of Michigan.
The Patriots have gone to the Michigan well in back-to-back years now, but both Chase Winovich and Josh Uche were safer projections at the next level than McGrone. That being said, the team apparently feels confident about his upside and medicals after taking a mid-round flyer on him.
McGrone now joins the four players that New England already selected so far in the draft. The Patriots picked quarterback Mac Jones (Alabama) in the first round on Thursday, before adding defensive tackle Christian Barmore (Alabama) and edge defender Ronnie Perkins (Oklahoma) in the second and third rounds, respectively, one day later.
Earlier today, running back Rhamondre Stevenson (Oklahoma) was selected as well.
After drafting McGrone, New England still owns three picks in the draft:
- Round 6: 6-188, 6-197
- Round 7: 7-242
How would you grade the Patriots’ decision to draft Cameron McGrone at No. 177?
