The New England Patriots have claimed tight end Kahale Warring off waivers from the Houston Texans, the organization confirmed Tuesday afternoon.
The move was first reported by NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.
Warring, 24, entered the league in the third round of the 2019 draft out of San Diego State. Pick No. 86 overall spent his rookie season on injured reserve due to a concussion and appeared in seven games last year with Houston, catching three passes for 35 yards after being designated to return from injured reserve in November.
General manager Nick Caserio’s Texans waived Warring on Monday in advance of the NFL’s 80-man roster deadline. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end had been targeted twice this preseason through 18 snaps on offense and 11 snaps on special teams.
During the pre-draft process, Warring ran the 40-yard dash in 4.67 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.21 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. There, the Aztecs product also recorded a 10-foot-2 broad jump to go with a 36.5-inch vertical jump.
New England’s depth chart at tight end stood with Jonnu Smith, Hunter Henry, Devin Asiasi and Matt LaCosse after Troy Fumagalli joined Dalton Keene on injured reserve last week. It now stands at an active five heading into joint practices with the New York Giants in Foxborough.
While being awarded Warring, the Patriots officially reduced from 85 players at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday.
