The New England Patriots waived former Houston Texans tight end Kahale Warring on Friday, the organization announced.
Warring, 24, had been awarded three days prior as rosters around the NFL reduced from 85 to 80 active players.
The Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints also put in claims for the San Diego State product, according to Field Yates of ESPN. New England held the higher waiver priority on the heels of a 7-9 regular season without a playoff berth.
Warring entered the league in the third round of the 2019 draft at No. 86 overall. He spent his rookie campaign on injured reserve with a concussion and saw action in seven games last year, catching three passes for 35 yards after being designated to return from injured reserve in November. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end drew two targets through two appearances this preseason with Houston before being waived.
The Patriots move forward with a depth chart that includes Jonnu Smith, Hunter Henry, Devin Asiasi and Matt LaCosse after both Dalton Keene and Troy Fumagalli were sent to injured reserve.
Asiasi, a third-round pick out of UCLA in 2020, started and played 66 percent of the offensive snaps as the lone available tight end in New England’s 35-0 preseason win over the Philadelphia Eagles last week. Fullback Jacob Johnson and swing tackle Justin Herron also took on responsibilities at the position.
The Patriots close out the August slate with a 6 p.m. ET kickoff Sunday against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. The 53-man roster deadline follows at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday.
