A recent departure from the quarterback room in Foxborough will be returning to it.

The New England Patriots are re-signing Will Grier to the practice squad, as first reported Tuesday by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Grier, 28, had been waived from the organization’s 53-man roster last weekend to make room for the promotion of offensive tackle Conor McDermott. He subsequently went through unclaimed to become a free agent.

Selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft at No. 100 overall, Grier started two games as a Carolina Panthers rookie. The West Virginia product completed 28-of-52 passes for 228 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions over that span. He has not made an appearance beyond the preseason since then.

Claimed off waivers in 2021, Grier logged the past two campaigns between the active roster and practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys. He arrived in New England off the scout team of the Cincinnati Bengals midway through September and served as the emergency third quarterback for seven weeks.

Mac Jones started and Bailey Zappe finished what became a 10-7 loss to the New York Giants last Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

The 2-9 Patriots carried a pair of openings on the practice squad. Grier’s agreement was not processed in time for Tuesday’s transaction wire.
