One of the best stories of an otherwise disappointing 2020 season for the New England Patriots was the emergence of Jakobi Meyers. The second-year wide receiver started his sophomore campaign buried on the depth chart, but after injuries suffered by Julian Edelman and N’Keal Harry rose to the occasion.
Meyers eventually finished the season as New England’s leading receiver: no other Patriot saw more targets (81), caught more passes (59) or registered more receiving yards (729) than the 24-year-old. Given his productivity in an otherwise stagnant passing offense, Meyers has now also made Pro Football Focus’ list of the top wide receivers of the 2020 season.
The lone Patriot listed, he checked in at number 25:
25. Jakobi Meyers, New England Patriots
Meyers was sneakily one of the most productive wide receivers in the league despite putting up a goose egg in the touchdowns column due to Josh McDaniels pounding the rock in the red zone. The former UDFA generated 2.24 yards per route run, 10th at the position and second among second-year wide receivers behind only A.J. Brown.
While he did not catch a touchdown, Meyers did throw two of them: the former college quarterback connected with Rex Burkhead and Cam Newton on scoring passes.
The former undrafted free agent was the lone consistent presence at the wide receiver position for the Patriots in 2020, and as such projects to also find a role on the team moving forward — regardless of the investments that will be made by New England this offseason.
