Following the inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday, there were plenty of reactions.
There was praise for the event’s performance program — from Lady Gaga singing the National Anthem to Amanda Gorman’s stunning inaugural poem The Hill We Climb. There also was as an appreciation for the historical nature of Kamala Harris becoming the first female Vice President in the history of the nation.
And then, there was Bernie Sanders sitting in a folding chair wearing the same jacket from the famous meme and a pair of recycled mittens.
The Senator from Vermont and his look sparked a social media frenzy that extended beyond the political into the sports world. New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was also among those participating in the fun, posting a photoshopped image of Sanders on the Patriots’ sideline.
The caption was simple yet brilliant: “I am once again asking you to read the cover 2 zone defense,” a play on the aforementioned meme of Sanders wearing that famous jacket of his. Like most of Edelman’s social media posts, this one was perfect as well.
