Patriots quarterback Cam Newton has better MVP odds than Jimmy Garoppolo this year

With the New England Patriots’ long-term outlook at the quarterback position still remaining unclear, every possible solution appears to be on the table — from drafting a quarterback early, to drafting one late, to riding with either Cam Newton or Jarrett Stidham, to swinging a trade for a veteran.

If the team goes the latter route, one name prominently associated with the organization is that of current San Francisco 49ers starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo. The former Patriot appears to be on his way out of San Francisco with the team all but certain to draft a new passer after trading up to the third overall spot.

The Garoppolo-to-New-England rumor mill has been working overtime this offseason, but a trade would make little sense for the Patriots. Not only is Garoppolo due a cap hit of $23.6 million, the 49ers are reportedly also asking for a first-round draft pick in return. Then, there is the question if he would even be an update over projected 2021 starter Cam Newton.

At least according to the oddsmakers at Bet Online, Garoppolo would not be. While his MVP odds would possibly change in the unlikely event that he indeed joins the Patriots, they currently do not work in his favor and will likely not swing dramatically even after a projected trade:

  • Cam Newton 50/1
  • Jimmy Garoppolo 80/1

As can be seen, neither quarterback is seriously in the MVP discussion heading into the 2021 season. The oddsmakers do prefer Newton’s outlook over that of Garoppolo, though.

As for the general odds, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is the MVP favorite (5/1) with his Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills counterparts, Aaron Rodgers (9/1) and Josh Allen (10/1), respectively next in line.

Ex-Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is tied for sixth with 16/1 odds.
