With three days to go until the NFL’s 2021 draft, the latest rumor has the San Francisco 49ers go with one of two quarterbacks: according to a report by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team is expected to decide between Alabama’s Mac Jones and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance.
San Francisco has been a safe bet to draft a quarterback since a massive trade up from No. 12 to No. 3. With Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) and Zach Wilson (BYU) projected to come off the board with the first two selections, the 49ers have the three remaining top-five QBs to choose from.
Apparently, the choice is down to only two with Ohio State’s Justin Fields currently not projected as a candidate for the club.
The rumor mill will obviously continue to run at full speed until draft night but San Francisco indeed picking between Jones and Lance would allow one of the highest-ceiling talents in this year’s class — Fields — to slip past them. Whether or not the New England Patriots would feel confident trading up to get him or another QB remains to be seen, but it appears as if the pieces are slowly starting to fall into place.
