Initial thoughts as the Patriots held on late to beat the Raiders 16-9 in their home opener.

The New England Patriots did not play very good football today, but they managed to hold on for a 16-9 victory over the Oakland Raiders in their season opener. Here are a few quick thoughts from the game:

Terrible, ugly, inconsistent game from the offense - and it all starts with the offensive line. For the second time in three weeks, the Patriots' protection was hard to watch. The Patriots made a struggling, injury depleted Raiders front seven look very good. Khalil Mack absolutely burned Nate Solder on one speed rush. Antonio Smith successfully bull-rushed both Dan Connolly and Sebastian Vollmer sack. Jordan Devey once again performed like a sub-replacement level player. Things may have improved a bit when Bryan Stork etnered the game late, but things need to improve, and quickly, if this is going to be a good football team.

Quarterback Tom Brady was inconsistent. He missed several first half throws, and was just off. His play began to steadily improve in the second half, and he finally hit a couple of downfield throws. But there was never really a sense that he was truly comfortable in this game. Once again, Julian Edelman was the focal point of the passing game. But hey, at least Brandon LaFell had three catches.

Also have to give Brady credit for his block on a 4th quarter Shane Vereen run. Vereen reversed field, and Brady led the way for him with an all-out lunging block on a Raiders' defensive back. Got to love that intensity.

Defensively, things were a bit up and down as well. The defensive line generally controlled the line of scrimmage despite Sealver Siliga leaving the game with an injury early. Vince Wilfork consistently got some push, and the Patriots had excellent linebacker play from Dont'a Hightower and Jerod Mayo.

In the passing game, Derek Carr generally took what the Patriots defense gave him, and stayed mistake free until the final drive. Carr wasn't afraid to target Darrelle Revis, and he had a lot of success doing so. While Revis struggled, the Patriots got some strong play from Kyle Arrington and Patrick Chung. Patriots couldn't come up with a sack, and Chandler Jones was contained for the most part by Donald Penn. However, it is worth noting that he had two great pass deflections at the line of scrimmage.

The Patriots struggled to finish drives, and this was an overall ugly game that included six field goals and only one touchdown (Brady to Rob Gronkowski). The Raiders nearly tied the game after a terrible, blown pass interference call on Logan Ryan resulted in a first and goal for the Raiders with just over a minute to play. However, a holding call pushed the Raiders back. The Patriots sealed the game with a fat guy interception from Vince Wilfork off a deflection. Yes it was ugly. But a win is a win.

Second half thread and first half thoughts as the Patriots lead the Raiders 10-3.

The New England Patriots hold a slim 10-3 lead over the Oakland Raiders at half time.

The Patriots have been okay defensively. The pass rush hasn't exactly been there, and they've been giving up a lot of short throws. However, they're limiting big plays, and winning at the line of scrimmage in the running game.

On offense, it's been a different story. Tom Brady has been erratic, and hasn't been able to consistently find any receivers besides Rob Gronkowski or Julian Edelman. He does have a touchdown pass to Gronkowski, but poor clock management at the end of the first half cost the Patriots four points.

The New England Patriots have announced their inactives for their week three match-up against the Oakland Raiders.

The New England Patriots have announced their inactives for their week three match-up against the Oakland Raiders:

Thoughts:

As expected, Shane Vereen is good to go despite being questionable with a shoulder injury. Vereen and Ridley will once again carry the load of the rushing offense.

Aaron Dobson is once again a healthy scratch. The Patriots are trying different combinations of receivers - last week Kenbrell Thompkins was the inactive.

Jamie Collins also makes his return, meaning the Patriots have their full linebacker corps.

The Raiders have also announced their inactives:

Matt Schaub, QB; Nick Roach, LB; Sio Moore, LB; Tony Bergstrom, G; Maurice Jones-Drew, RB; Chimdi Chekwa, CB; Matt McCants, T

As expected, the Raiders will be without two of their three starting linebackers with Nick Roach (questionable) also being declared out.

The Patriots play host to the Raiders and hope to break above .500 for the first time all season. Here's how they can win.

The New England Patriots host the Oakland Raiders and look to make their record 2-1. While the Raiders are the big underdogs, the Patriots haven't put together a complete game this season. This is the perfect opportunity for the team to put it all together.

Here's how the Patriots can beat the Raiders:

1) Defensive Trajectory. The entire defense put together a fantastic game after a bad first drive against the Vikings. Chandler Jones and Dont'a Hightower broke out, while Devin McCourty and Darrelle Revis stood out as well. There's just too much talent on this defense not to play well. These four main players need to put together another strong performance, while Jamie Collins, Dominique Easley, and whoever is playing corner opposite of Revis need to put up a positive performance.

2) Stop Darren McFadden. It could be argued that Marcel Reece is the Raider's version of the Dolphins' Charles Clay, the player that the Patriots keyed in on for week 1. However, the Raiders grossly underutilize him on the field. The other player on the offense who can provide a spark is running back McFadden, who is greatly inconsistent. Last week he saw 14 touches for 68 yards and a touchdown, after just five touches for 21 yards in week 1. McFadden is their lead back and should be used as their workhorse to take pressure off of rookie quarterback Derek Carr.

3) Pressure Carr. The Patriots need to treat Carr like a veteran, instead of trying to force him to beat them. Carr utilizes his checkdowns well, so if the Patriots sit back in their coverage, Carr won't be baited into challenging the secondary. The defensive line will need to apply pressure to Carr if they want the rookie to make mistakes. Jones, Easley, Hightower, and Rob Ninkovich should have a big game dialed up.

4) Revis on James Jones. This is the perfect game for Revis to shadow the opposing top receiver. Beyond Jones, the rest of the Raiders receivers are good, but they don't command as much focus. Jones leads the team in targets with 17, collecting 12 for 130 yards and two touchdowns. The next target is Denarius Moore with 13 targets- he's only reeled in five. The Raiders use tight end Mychal Rivera as a checkdown target and he should be covered by the strong safety.

5) Offensive Output. While the defense needs to string together another positive game, the offense is still looking for its first good game of the year. The offensive line is entering its third week as a unit, so hopefully they'll look better in protection. The receivers have been unable to generate consistent pressure, so you can be sure that Tom Brady will try and spread the ball around.

The Raiders defense has a few shining points; linebacker Sio Moore is great, but is out with an injury. Safety Charles Woodson still plays with tremendous fire, but is a couple weeks from his 38th birthday. Beyond that, rookie Khalil Mack shows promise as a linebacker, but has plenty of room to grow. He reminds of young Ninkovich- he sets the edge very well and can get into the backfield from time to time; every play will be a positive. He just doesn't have a play that jumps off the screen- but keep in mind he's only played two games in the NFL.

This is the game the Patriots need to show they can play a complete and complementary football game.

Fantasy start / sit advice for the Patriots' week three match-up against the Oakland Raiders.

Previewing the Patriots' fantasy football prospects for the team's week three match-up against the Oakland Raiders:

Start

Stevan Ridley, RB: Ridley is the must-start for the Patriots this week. His heavy week two workload could increase even more headed into week three. The Raiders run defense has struggled, and they'll be without two of their three starting linebackers. If the Patriots get ahead early, the team could ride Ridley most of the way.

Julian Edelman, WR: Until Tom Brady proves he can trust another receiver on the Patriots roster, Edelman is a must start as a WR2, or borderline WR1 in PPR.

Rob Gronkowski, TE: Gronk is going to continue sitting in this spot. He's due for a breakout game soon, and there aren't many tight ends who pose the red zone threat he does, even while his snaps are limited as he gets back into the flow.

Sit

Shane Vereen, RB: Vereen had a down week last week, but a lot of that had to do with the Patriots' commitment to the run. If they go with that heavy run:pass ratio again today, Vereen may not see a lot of touches.

Tom Brady, QB: Brady was highly efficient in week two, but wasn't asked to throw the ball much. Even when he did, there weren't many down the field throws. Once again, a commitment to the run could mean low numbers for Brady, even if he plays well.

Every WR/TE not named Julian or Rob: Not that it really needed to be said.

Everything you need to know to watch the Patriots week three match-up against the Oakland Raiders.

At 1:00 PM ET today, the New England Patriots will kick off their 2014 home schedule with an intra-conference match-up against the Oakland Raiders.

The Patriots and the Raiders haven't faced off since 2011, when New England traveled to Oakland and handed the Raiders a 31-13 loss.

The Patriots are 1-1 after an opening day loss to the Dolphins and a bounce-back win against the Vikings last week.
